Exterior Render Painting in Cheshire: What Homeowners Should Know

Exterior render should be assessed before a colour or start date is chosen. Cracks, damp, chalking and previous coatings influence both the preparation and whether painting is appropriate.

Inspect the render in dry conditions

Look for hollow or loose areas, open cracks, algae, flaking paint, powdery surfaces and water entry around roofs, gutters, sills or pipes. Decoration should not hide a defect that needs repair by the appropriate trade.

Fine stable hairline marks are different from active structural movement. If cracks are significant or returning, obtain suitable advice before filling and painting.

Clean without damaging the surface

Loose dirt and biological growth have to be removed using a method suitable for the render. Excessive pressure can cut into weak render or force water into defects. Protect windows, doors, plants, neighbouring property and nearby vehicles.

Allow the surface to dry fully. A wall can look dry at the face while retained moisture remains in cracks or repairs.

Match repairs to the substrate

Use repair materials compatible with the render and expected movement. Dense, unsuitable patches can weather differently and remain visible through the finish. Texture and profile should be considered as well as colour.

New repairs may require a curing period before coating. Follow the repair and paint manufacturers' guidance rather than relying on a fixed number of days in all conditions.

Stabilise only where required

A chalky or porous surface may need a compatible stabilising primer, but stabiliser is not a universal first coat. Applying it over sound paint or contamination can create its own adhesion problem.

Choose an exterior masonry system

Check that the product is suitable for the specific render, previous coating and exposure. Breathability, water resistance, colour retention and application temperature matter. The number of coats should follow the system, not just whichever amount appears to cover.

Plan access and weather

Exterior painting needs safe access and enough suitable weather for preparation, drying and recoating. Wind can carry dust or spray, direct sun can make surfaces dry too quickly, and overnight temperatures or rain can affect curing.

Washing, treating biological growth, scraping loose paint, repairing compatible defects and masking windows can take longer than applying the finish. High gables, conservatories and sloping ground may require scaffold or other planned access. A quote should make clear who provides access and which repairs are included.

Weather is part of the specification

Check the coating's permitted temperature, rain-free period and drying conditions. A dry forecast alone is not enough if the wall is cold, damp or in strong direct sun. Work should be sequenced so vulnerable elevations are not coated just before rain or falling temperatures.

Agree the details

Confirm colours and finishes for render, plinths, pipes, metalwork and timber. Ask how windows, paving, plants and neighbouring property will be protected. Keep the exact product and colour reference for maintenance. A clear written scope prevents disagreement over areas that look small but take careful cutting-in.
