How to Prepare a Room Before a Decorator Arrives

A room does not have to be empty before a decorator arrives unless that has been agreed, but clear access and confirmed decisions help the first day begin efficiently.

Confirm the written scope

Check which ceilings, walls, doors, frames, skirting, radiators and cupboards are included. If repairs or wallpaper removal have changed since the quote, mention this before the start date rather than after protection is laid.

Confirm colours, product ranges and sheen levels. Keep order receipts or labels available if you have supplied the paint.

Remove small and valuable items

Take down ornaments, photographs, fragile lamps and personal valuables. Empty window sills and move toiletries, food or pet items away from the work area.

Ask before removing curtain poles, blinds, televisions or heavy mirrors because their removal may affect the quoted work or require another competent trade.

Create working space

If practical, move light furniture out of the room. Larger pieces may be grouped centrally and covered, but the agreement should be clear. Decorators need safe space around the full wall, doors and access route.

Wardrobes and cupboards normally remain closed unless their interiors are included. Remove clothing or contents if they need to be opened or moved.

Discuss floors and recent work

Tell the decorator about new flooring, recently plastered areas, wet repairs or furniture that cannot be moved. New floors may require a specific protection method that avoids adhesive or trapped moisture.

Coordinate electricians, joiners and flooring installers so they are not working over one another or damaging fresh paint.

Arrange practical access

Confirm parking, keys, alarms, working hours, water, electricity and where materials can be stored. Explain any building rules, permits or neighbour restrictions.

Pets and children should be kept away from tools, open paint and wet surfaces. Tell the decorator about escape-prone animals before doors or gates are opened.

Decide what happens at the end of each day

For occupied homes, agree which rooms or routes must be usable each evening. Ventilation and drying conditions should follow product guidance without compromising security.

Before the final handover

View the work in normal lighting, check the agreed scope and identify any genuine snagging together. Keep product names and colours for future maintenance.

Point out leaks, previous water staining, damp concerns, loose plaster, cracks, silicone, old distemper or unusual coatings. Mention alarms, pets, access codes and anyone who may be vulnerable to dust or odour. The decorator can then plan the right preparation and ventilation.

Protect the working day

Arrange a clear route from the entrance to the room and identify a water source and suitable wash-up arrangement. Keep children and pets away from tools and wet coatings. At the end, inspect the agreed work in normal light and ask for product and colour details for your records.
